This month’s favourites

What ho! We are already half way through June. Summer is here! Graduation has passed (successfully, and with no trips or falls or late arrivals), and now I have a time to figure out what I need to do. In the mean time, a few things have crept into my obsessive field (if you can call it that), and I thought I would share them:

Such a great movie. If there’s anything I love more than a historical drama (or the costumes), it’s probably the soundtrack. Magic.

 I think I finished it within a week. Honestly, I just… I can’t…

Sigh. That’s how thrilled I was with it. So many great quotes.

(ps: Malec!!!!)

And speaking of which… This. It’s just beautiful.

Tight pants. Now you’ll have that stuck in your head. You’re welcome.

This tumblr. Actually, I discovered it last month, but oh well. (I don’t think there has ever been a site that’s made me laugh hard/want to barf at the same time.) You’re welcome. Again.

6. And finally…

Strawberries. They’re getting in season, and nothing sounds more appealing than a homemade strawberry tart. Or strawberry scone. Or strawberry everything. Bring on the summer fruit season!

It’s June!

After five and a half months of ice, snow, and frigid temperatures…. We made it. And oh, what a relief it is! Now it’s time to get outside, fire up the barbecue and sit out with a drink on those warm nights…

You know what else it’s time for? Graduation.  The ceremonious event where you are supposed to celebrate your achievement of moving up and on into the world. Exciting yes, but also bittersweet in that you’re saying goodbye to the familiarity in class routines, and of course, your friends.  This is where the nostalgia hits.

For me, oddly enough, it evokes memories of my grade 6 commencement, which took place in the gym of our public school. . (Maybe because it was my first? Apparently Dal doesn’t cut it.) It went well, I guess, but I remember crying afterwards because I didn’t win any special awards. (There’s even a picture of 11 year old me in my pretty grad dress, with lovely red-rimmed eyes, looking oh so sullen.) Memories! Sweet….. Memories. (If I could beam myself back to that day, I probably would tell my younger self some magic words: suck it up!!! Ok, perhaps a bit too harsh. I was a rather sensitive kid.)

Silliness aside, it’s what comes after graduation that’s been pegging my brain. In fact, most of the time I’ve been pegging my brain as to where I want to go from journalism school. Obviously somewhere as a writer, but in a bigger sense. I like to think that the the theory, “this is where you are supposed to be” somehow rings true. And perhaps it does.

For my generation, there’s no question that it’s as if our 20s’ are a time for bumbling through til we’re on the right track. I’m definitely still bumbling, but with a little patience and hard work, I’m determined to get somewhere. And with the beginning of summer, perhaps it can happen.

I leave you with a corny 1950s musical rendition of “June is Bustin’ out all over”, which I always seem to think of around this time of year.

We can celebrate summer now!
